Common Infectious Diseases

These are common infectious diseases that we are equipped to handle the cleanup.

C. Diff

C. Diff (Clostridum Difficile) is an extremely contagious bacteria and is difficult to eradicate from an area due to its resistance to household cleaning products. Able to live outside outside of a body for 70-90 days, it’s extremely important to have an area professionally cleaned wherever an infected person has been. Though it’s often thought to mainly affect those who have recently taken antibiotics or been in healthcare settings, C. Diff has been spreading in recent years and can infect anyone. Symptoms usually include:

  • abdominal cramping and tenderness
  • dehydration
  • diarrhea
  • blood in stool
  • nausea
  • rapid heart rate
  • fever

HIV

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a retrovirus affecting the immune system that can develop into AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). The disease alters the immune system making a person more susceptible to other diseases such as cancer, Tuberculosis, and kidney disease, among others, which often leads to death, though not necessarily. HIV is spread by bodily fluids such as blood, vaginal fluids, breast milk, and semen. As the disease progresses, the symptoms worsen. The symptoms often include:

  • unintentional weight loss
  • tiredness
  • sweats
  • sore throat
  • weakness
  • fever
  • Shingles
  • swollen lymph nodes

Hepatitis A, B, & C

Hepatitis A, B, & C are virus strains that cause an acute inflammation of the liver. Depending on the strain, the viruses can be easily spread from person to person via food, water, and bodily fluids including blood. Though there are vaccines for Hepatitis A & B, there is no vaccine for Hepatitis C. While there are medications to treat B & C, Hepatitis A usually goes away on its own though it’s extremely contagious and can easily be spread to the wide population. The symptoms often include:

  • yellowing of the skin and eyes
  • fever
  • muscle and joint aches
  • fatigue
  • fever
  • nausea
  • vomiting

MRSA

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a serious staph infection spread by bacteria growing unseen on any surface with which an infected person has come into contact. As the MRSA bacteria possesses a high resistance to antibiotics, it is difficult to kill and thus extremely contagious. Though the bacteria is most often found in those with a compromised immune system such as the elderly and young children, anyone can be infected. Though the symptoms depend on the infected area, they often include:

  • fatigue
  • rashes
  • headaches
  • fever
  • muscle aches
  • cough
  • shortness of breath

Flu

Though a person can become sick from the flu any time during the year, typically the virus is spread in the months from fall to spring. During these times, outbreaks in a school or business can occur. These can be as minor as a couple of cases or where there are so many people sick that the business or school have to close. To keep this from happening, to you, it’s important to make sure your location is decontaminated and sanitized. Though the flu shares many symptoms with the common cold, a cold comes on slowly while the flu comes quickly and is accompanied by a fever. Though most people recover after several days, the flu can be fatal. Symptoms include:

  • muscle and joint aches
  • diarrhea (in children)
  • vomiting (in children)
  • fever
  • runny nose
  • dry cough
  • headache
  • sore throat
  • weakness

Measles

Though in past years the measles virus was rare due to vaccines, it’s becoming more common as more people are not vaccinated against it. Once infected, a person usually takes 7-14 days to show any symptoms and so the virus is incredibly infectious as it spreads when the person doesn’t yet know they’re sick.  After 2-3 days of several symptoms including a runny nose, cough, red, watery eyes, and a fever, white spots appear in the mouth. After 3-5 days more, an angry rash appears near the head and quickly makes its way down to the feet. A list of symptoms include:

  • high fever
  • white spots in mouth
  • red, watery eyes
  • cough
  • runny nose
