What is MRSA
MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is a bacteria that is highly contagious and resistant to most antibiotics. Part of the staph infection family of bacteria, this strain has developed an immunity to most common antibacterials used to treat it. Symptoms depend on the infected area but often includes rashes on the skin or boils.
Two Kinds of MRSA Bacteria
MRSA has typically been found among people with compromised immune systems such as children and the elderly. In recent years, however, a second type of MRSA has been seen in the wider population as well.
Typically found among healthy people, MRSA can spread through direct contact via skin, clothing, or an object recently touched by a MRSA infected person. Particularly at risk are people who have close contact with others such as sports teams, those who work in schools, people who live in close quarters, military recruits, and prison inmates.
This second type of MRSA is typically found in hospitals and other medical facilities. As MRSA is especially dangerous when it finds its way into a body, MRSA is often spread through medical equipment such as catheters or feeding tubes along with surgical procedures.
To avoid an MRSA infection, there are several things you can do:
- Wash hands often with hot water and soap
- Treat and cover wounds
- Avoid touching anything an MRSA infected person has come into contact with
- If an infected person has been in your home or business, call us for MRSA decontamination right away.
If a person infected with MRSA has been in your home or business, do not attempt MRSA cleanup yourself or you, too, may become infected. Our MRSA remediation experts are trained to manage these types of infectious diseases and will come in with professional equipment and protective gear to thoroughly clean, disinfect, and sanitize every area, making sure it is safe for you and your loved ones
